Kerala's Governor, P Sathasivam, who is a former chief justice, is staring ahead at an awkward, difficult situation. He has to appoint a man he convicted, politician R Balakrishna Pillai, as chairman of the State Forward Communities’ Welfare Corporation.
As per a Live Law report, Sathasivam, along with Justice B S Chauhan (presently Chairman of the Law Commission of India), had convicted Kerala politician Pillai and sentenced him to imprisonment for a year with a fine of Rs 10,000 in a case of corruption in the Idamalayar Hydroelectric Power Project.
The decision to appoint Pillai as chairman of the Welfare Corporation will not be an easy one for Sathasivam. Pillai, on the other hand, has the Left government in Kerala to thank for his appointment despite his criminal antecedents.

A retired Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) officer was denied entry into Canada at Vancouver International Airport last week. Tejinder Singh Dhillon, who retired in 2010 as Inspector-General of Police in the CRPF was declared ‘inadmissible’ to Canada because he was employed by a government deemed by immigration officials as involved in “terrorism, systematic or gross human rights violations, or genocide”.
Dhillon was handed a document which said he was a “prescribed senior official in the service of a government that, in the opinion of the Minister, engages or has engaged in terrorism, systematic or gross human rights violations, or genocide, a war crime or a crime against humanity” under Canada’s Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.
The letter to Dhillon
Dhillon, who said he held a Canadian visa that is valid till 2024, has made multiple trips to the North American nation over the last 30 years, even when he was a CRPF official. However, officials at Vancouver refused entry, saying the CRPF has “committed widespread and systemic human rights abuses, for example torture, arbitrary detention, murder and sexual assault”.
This action by Canada is bound to have consequences. It could very well jeopardise the already-frail relations between India and Canada.
‘Human Shield’ Row: Major Gogoi Says He Took The Step To Save Local People

Major Leetul Gogoi defended his action by saying he took the step to save the local people.
After the Jammu and Kashmir Police refused to quash the First Information Report (FIR) against him for tying a man to the bonnet of his jeep to serve as a 'human shield', Major Leetul Gogoi today (23 May) defended his act by saying he took the step "to save the local people."
“We went to a polling booth to check the security situation, and then some people started pelting stones at us. Then, the stone pelters started throwing petrol bombs at us. I took that step just to save local people,” Major Gogoi said in a press briefing in New Delhi.
Earlier, political parties were left irked when Major Gogoi was awarded the Chief of Army Staff’s Commendation Card for his sustained distinguished service in counter-insurgency operations in the state. They felt his measures against stone pelters would only aggravate the situation in the Valley.
The officer was awarded by Army chief Gen Bipin Rawat during his recent visit to Jammu and Kashmir.
Major Gogoi was in the spotlight after a video shot during the 9 April Srinagar Lok Sabha by-polls, posted on social media, showed a man tied on the bonnet of an Army jeep in Jammu and Kashmir's Badgam.
The video went viral and sparked a major controversy, with one faction condemning the Army's action while the other commending their ingenuity.

Arnab Goswami Gets Notice From Delhi High Court In Times Now Copyright Infringement Suit
Swarajya Staff- 23 May, 2017, 5:00 pm
Arnab Goswami
Times Now, after sending a legal notice to Arnab Goswami’s Republic TV for alleged copyright infringement, has sued the channel in the Delhi High Court, reports Live Law. Bennett Coleman and Company Limited (BCCL), Times Now’s parent body, took them to court alleging that two of their shows used information obtained during Goswami’s tenure with them.
Republic TV had aired tapes of former Bihar chief minister Lalu Prasad Yadav and mafia don Shahabuddin on the day of its launch before going forward and airing a few recordings from 2014 of politician Shashi Tharoor’s late wife Sunanda Pushkar. Times Now has claimed that the broadcast tapes were acquired by Goswami and and his team when they were employed with BCCL, thus making those tapes the intellectual property of BCCL.
The Times Now group is, however, yet to place anything on record to show that the tapes were part of its database, reported Live Law. For this reason, Goswami and other defendants have only received a brief notice from the High Court.
